My area of expertise is the study of literary, social and historical developments in Brazil throughout the twentieth century and beyond, but I have also taught courses in Portuguese and comparative literature, language and translation from the Middle Ages to the present day at universities in the UK and Brazil, including a position for two years at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Teaching Responsibilities

Undergraduate: Portuguese Language; Language and Language Teaching (Unknown Language); Cultural Studies; Using Technology in the Language Teaching Classroom ; Introduction to Latin American History (Brazil , its historical origins and contemporary situation).

Postgraduate: MA Translation Studies; Special Language Project; Specialised Translation, Translating History, Research Management and Dissertation Supervision.  


My research interests encompass software politics in Brazil, and their role in national and international development; digital inclusion and the role of social technologies and digitised oral history projects in Portugal and Brazil; digital art and aesthetics, and some comparative studies of Brazilian literature, focusing on women’s writing in particular. I also have an interest in language teaching, with particular reference to students’ creativity and agency, genre, and the use of multimedia digital applications, and have organised workshops and panels, and authored papers in all these areas. I have published a Portuguese language course, Collins Easy Learning Portuguese (London: HarperCollins: 2013, 2nd ed).
