Money and finance
Our Student Finance Centre can help you throughout your time here. They offer advice on everything from available funding, through to planning (and sticking to) a budget. Look out for the team around campus and at various events. They’ll help you manage your finances, so you can make the most of life. If you experience financial difficulties as a student, you may be eligible for additional support from one of the hardship funds they administer. The team will always treat you with respect and put your needs and interests first. Everything you tell them is in confidence.
Tuition fee loans – you can apply for a tuition fee loan each year to cover your fees. Student Finance England will pay the money directly to the University on your behalf.
Maintenance loans – these are available each year to help with living costs such as accommodation, food and bills. Loan amounts vary according to where you live while you study and your household income. The loan will be paid directly to you, in three termly instalments.
How to apply
If you haven’t yet applied for your student finance make sure you do this as soon as possible, because it can take 6 to 8 weeks for Student Finance England to process your application. If you don’t have a confirmed place simply use your first choice of course and change it online at a later date if you need to.
The quickest and easiest way to apply for your funding is on the Government's student finance website.
To ensure your funding is in place for the start of term, you need to have applied before the end of May. If you have missed this deadline don’t worry; you can still apply. However, you might receive your first loan instalment a little late – so make sure you bring enough money with you to cover this. If there’s going to be a significant delay with your funding, come to the Student Finance Centre once you’ve arrived in Portsmouth, we may be able to help.
Remember: the Student Finance Centre at the University and Student Finance England are different organisations. The University will not be able to access your application to Student Finance England, but we can help you contact Student Finance England.
When you’ll be paid
You will not be paid any student support until you have completed the University's online registration form, had your personal identification checked by your department, and the course start date has been reached.
We will then send Student Finance England confirmation of your attendance after the start of term, and your money should be in your bank account within three to five working days.
Make sure you keep your information secure. Don’t keep your customer reference number and login details in the same place. Student Finance England will never email you asking you to confirm your login details or bank account details. If you receive an email that appears to be from them and asks you to visit their site and confirm your details then it is probably a phishing email. Phishing is a fraudulent activity designed to trick you into giving out your login details. Fraudsters will use this information to login to your account and steal information. If you receive an email like this then you should forward it to email@example.com.
If you think that someone might have guessed or found your login details, or you have disclosed them after a phishing email, reset your password and secret answer online.
Contacting Student Finance England
Differing ways of getting in touch with Student Finance England can be found on their website.
If your student finance application has been finalised and you’ve received a ‘Notification of Entitlement’ letter, then you should receive your first loan instalment three to five working days after you’ve completed the formal registration process in your faculty. So you’ll need to bring enough cash to last you the first week.
If you’re in halls of residence then you’ll also need to make sure that you have made arrangements to pay your accommodation fees. Details of how to set up either termly or monthly payments are on your allocation notice. Make sure you know how you have arranged to pay the fees and that the first payment leaves your account.
If you’re in private accommodation make sure you know when your rent is due and how you have arranged to pay it (i.e. monthly or termly). Most landlords will ask you to set up a standing order from your bank account.
We advise that you bring enough money with you to last you at least the first few weeks, just in case there are any delays with your Student Finance application. We can arrange hardship loans in the event of an emergency but it’s best if you come prepared.

You may be eligible for a University bursary below. Bursaries are paid on top of any other student finance and you don’t have to pay them back.
University of Portsmouth Bursary
All eligible students from England* who qualify for the full maintenance loan due to their household income will receive a cash bursary in 2018/19.
This is £750 for household incomes up to £25,000.
The University bursary is not available to sponsored students, or students on placement or repeat years.
*Full time, undergraduate students starting in 2018 paying the full £9,250 fee.
How to apply
You do not need to apply to the University for this bursary as we will automatically assess your eligibility using the information you gave on your application to Student Finance England.
So we can assess you for the bursary you need to make sure:
- You have applied to Student Finance England for finance based on your household income.
- Your Student Finance England application is for the University of Portsmouth.
- Your parents or partner have completed their section of your application with their income details.
- You (and your parents or partner) have provided your consent to share your information with the University.

If you’ve recently opened a student bank account, and you want your loan to be paid into this new account, then you’ll need to update your bank details with Student Finance England.
You can edit and amend your bank details online – just log in to your Student Finance account.
It could take up to a month for your account to be updated – so make sure you leave enough time to make these changes before the start of term.
